Sports dietitian in Charlotte, NC providing personalized nutrition counseling for athletes and eating disorders

Hey there!

I'm Katie Best, a registered dietitian, board certified specialist in sports dietetics, and owner of Best Performance Nutrition. I'm also a former college volleyball athlete, dog mom, amateur crafter, and an enthusiastic (but not always successful) gardener.

philosophy

I've seen nutrition function as a helpful tool and difference-maker for athletes, and as a focus that becomes obsessive and harmful. Too often, athletes think that nutrition has to be regimented, rules-based, and downright boring to make an impact on their performance. I'm here to dispel that myth, and show athletes that fueling can be flexible, fit their lifestyle, prioritize their health, and move them closer to their performance goals.

My approach is informed by principles of intuitive eating. This means is that I encourage you to use your body's own internal cues and combine that with your nutrition knowledge to make fueling choices that are right for your particular circumstances (which might vary day to day or meal to meal!).

In our work together, I also focus on subjective and objective performance metrics. Objective metrics might include values like race times, amount of sets/reps or weight lifted, or game statistics from your particular sport, fueling frequency or variety, resolution of nutrition-related symptoms, and others. Subjective metrics might be things you perceive or experience that can't be measured, such as changes in recovery, attunement to your body's fueling needs, how you feel during training or competition, or changes in your fueling mindset or behaviors.

One metric I do not focus on much is weight, as your weight does not tell me much about your actual athletic performance. With a few exceptions (athletes participating in weight class sports, athletes struggling with hydration), weight is not something we will focus on unless you have a particular desire to do so. If that is the case, we can explore that together.
